Background

Unlike traditional espresso machines, the Strada X is able to adjust the pressure during the extraction process in real time, allowing the barista to tweak their extraction process. When La Marzocco was looking to build a new version of their Strada EP, they turned to Luminaire to help develop the product.

Project
  • Over the ten years of development, Luminaire worked with La Marzocco to design, develop, and test many iterations of the brewing process. This iterative approach which involved focused testing of specific theories in the lab and the field, led to the creation of the Smart Saturation and mass-based profiles present on the Strada X
  • Luminaire identified an electronics architecture for the Strada X which involved reusing existing circuit boards and designing new circuit boards to read and drive new actuators and sensors.
Impact
  • The Strada X has been well received in the market, selling more than initially expected.
  • Coffee shop owners have expressed that the features specific to the Strada X, which were developed via careful testing, have created an easy to use product which allows them to make better and more consistent coffee for their customers.
